The Diva Cup review and Giveaway!

August 18, 2011 33 Comments
I know I've had some readers patiently waiting for this review and I'm really sorry it's taken me so long to get it posted. I had big ideas for it but things didn't work out so I figured I'd better get this up anyway!

What is the diva cup?
The diva cup is a menstrual alternative to disposable tampons and sanitary pads.  It is a non-absorbent menstual cup that collects menstrual flow.  It is inserted and sits low in the vagina.  The cup can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for another 12 hours.  It can be used any time of your flow, heavy or light and is perfect for overnight.

  • It is latex-free, BPA-free and plastic free
  • It has zero dyes, colours or additives
  • It is comfortable and reliable
  • Clean, convenient, and easy to use
Make sure you check out their website for TONS more information about what the Diva cup is, how to use it, where to buy it, etc.

Why I use the Diva Cup

I started looking for alternatives to pads and tampons many years ago when I was so fed up with the painful itchiness, rashes, and inflammation I had each time I had my period and had to use pads/tampons.
I knew there had to be something different but I couldn't find it.  When I did find the Diva cup, no one knew much about it and I was intimidated by it.  I felt I might be "weird" if I used it, no one I knew used one so I didn't have anyone to talk to about it, so ultimately I left it on the shelf.  Right after I had Ev, I just couldn't HANDLE the uncomfortable week once a month any longer, I had to find something different.  I went to a local store and found what I was looking for.  I picked it up off the shelf and was immediately approached by the lady that worked there.  She told me if I had any questions to ask.  Okay, that's a good start....."Do you know much about this product?" I asked her.  "Oh yes!" That's all I had to say to get the conversation started.  That's all I had to say to get the passion radiating from the sales lady about how she LOVED the Diva cup!

I was sold!  I bought it right then and there and HAVEN'T turned back!

My Initial reaction - 3 months ago (3 cycles)

The first cycle was the hardest, if that's even the right word because it wasn't really hard.  I was just unsure of exact placement when inserting the Diva cup and did have a few leaks. I made sure to have a panty liner on for this exact reason.  Once I figured out the proper way to insert the cup it was good from then on.

I was a bit concerned at first because I have had two children and was worried that because I did have some tearing delivering both of them the cup would fall out.  Because of this I opted for Size 2 (sizing here).   During my first cycle, I could feel the cup and sometimes felt like the cup was going to fall out (it never did).  I did some looking around online and found that others had complained of the same thing and they trimmed the tip of the cup down a bit.  I decided I would trim the tip too and found that this really help with that protruding feeling.  I no longer feel the cup at all!

What I love about the Diva Cup

I LOVE that they are a Canadian company (actually they are a local company to me which is even more exciting)!

I LOVE that I am no longer dealing with the pain, itchiness, rash, inflamed soreness I had each time I was menstruating before using the Diva Cup.

I LOVE that I am helping to save the planet and being conscious of our environment!  I am no longer helping throw away the 12 billion sanitary pads and 7 billion tampons into our North American landfills.

I LOVE that I am no longer putting dangerous additives near or inside my body.  Did you know, most pads and tampons contain dioxin, a known carcinogen.  It's a by-product of the bleaching process and obviously nothing we should have INSIDE our bodies!

And although menstrual cups have never been associated with TSS, I can't make any claims to this nature.  I personally feel I am protecting myself against the risk of it*.  To find out more information about Tampon related TSS please go to You ARE love.org and read Amy's story, she lost her life because of TSS at the age of 20!

So if you're interested in using the Diva Cup, my first thought would be to send you to the FAQ page on their website.  Read about the Diva Cup make sure it's something you want to commit to.  It's totally worth it and trust me, you will feel 100% different about your period.

I have found I have less cramping, less clotting (I know its kind of gross to talk about this right?). And just a much happier period (wait isn't that the slogan for Always??)  Anyway it's true, I am a total convert I LOVE feeling free of itchy, painful pads and tampons!  It really is freeing!

The Diva cup is definitely becoming more popular on store shelves! Yippee!  So check out the store finder to find a retailer near you or you can buy online here!

Of course, I wouldn't let my readers down...be sure to enter using Rafflecopter to win a Diva Cup of your very own! :)

Get Back to school! Review and Giveaway!

August 09, 2011 15 Comments
Disclaimer - I was given this product(s) free of charge for review purposes.  These opinions are 100% my own.

So who's ready for back to school? Hard to believe there's only a few more weeks before all our kiddos head back to the books.

H has started preschool already this year (they didn't have a spot except for one starting in July so we swooped in and took that up). It's so hard to get a daycare/preschool spot that one place in our area still hasn't contacted with us about a spot available from when we applied before H was even born!! That's over three years ago!

Back to school is such a fun and exciting time for both parents and of course kids. Theres TONS of the excitement buying new clothes, new shoes, book supplies, backpacks, lunch bags, pens, pencils, etc. but we as parents are always concerned about stuff being left on the school bus, at friends houses, in the lunch room, just about anywhere your kids are theres a big chance they are going to leave something behind.

When H started preschool I really wanted to avoid the 'Mommy I can't find...." conversations all the time so I quickly started looking for solutions to this problem.

That's when I found...

Mabel's Labels started from two moms who were frustrated by the amount of stuff that left their home, and never came back. They did plenty of research and testing and created the perfect label for the stuff our kids lose!

All their sticky labels and clothing labels are dishwasher, microwave and laundry safe, and customized with a child’s name, choice of colours and icon. How great is it that!  Your child can help decide exactly what their labels look like. When I was contacted by Mabel's Labels to do a review, I was so excited to give them a try, but what was more exciting was seeing how excited H was when I asked to her to help me choose what they would say (her name) and the icon! It's really easy to do!

Mabel's labels isn't just for kids they also offer child safety products and household labels. They are continuously creating innovative labels for babies, kids and grown-ups. You’ll be amazed at what you can label!

They have such a great selection to choose from and you definitely have to check out the website. Here you can find out exactly what products they offer, what combo packs you can choose from, what icons they have as well as colours and more. You can also find a link to a great checklist of what your children will need when it comes to back to school shopping.

I was sent the Ultimate back to school combo  which includes some of the must haves for back to school labelling including

It was exactly what I was looking for!  I needed to label H's clothing, stuffed animals/toys she brings to school, her shoes, her canteen, etc.  This combo takes care of it all!

Let me talk about the actual labels for a second!  I have ZERO complaints!  They are beautiful to look at, impossible to pull off and I have had no issues with any of them being put in the laundry or dishwasher.  I am very happy with how the labels have worked for my family!

What some?

Buy them

The Ultimate back to school combo pack is a great option to have for Back to School time or ANY time and at a price point of $42, it's not a bad investment.   They do have some other options though in combo packs (some more expensive and some less expensive).  Make sure you take a look around the website to find exactly what you're looking for.

With how quickly the summer has come and gone make sure to order yours before your children come home without their favourite sweater, stuffy, etc.

You can buy Mabel's labels directly from there website here!

Or win some here at Get Healthy Momma! :)

Mabel's Labels has generously offered one of my LUCKY readers an Ultimate Back to school combo pack of your very own! How awesome is that (remember it's a $42 value)

Inches - Time to check in....

August 03, 2011 1 Comments
It's been awhile since I've talked much about my weight loss on here (my original motivation for this blog). I think it's been since this last post when I measured myself.

Yesterday I decided it was time to measure up again.  See what the verdict is and if I've been able to continue with the inch loss.  Turns out YUP I can! :)  I seem to have hit a plateau with my weight.  At least right now when I don't have much time to get out to the gym.  I believe strongly that once I get that opportunity I'll be able to jump start the weight loss.  But right now I'm currently down about 20lbs from what I was after I had E.

I took my usual measurements yesterday, bust, waist, belly, hips, both thighs and both arms.
